Inclusion, Diversity, Equity
& Advocacy
The IDEA Committee
We have a dedicated group of parents that meets regularly to discuss ways that our school and events can build and encourage an inclusive and equitable learning environment for our students and families.
All parents are welcome to join the monthly meetings, and many opportunities exist for parent participation on various levels.
Assemblies
We've had a variety of wonderful assemblies that are presented throughout the school year. In the past which have included cultural themes, authors, science related activities and even the Story Pirates.
Folders & Planners
We provide red communication folders to all students as well as planners to students in grades 4/5. The week before school, a group of volunteers come to school one day and stuff/distribute folders to each classroom.
Coffee & Kleenex
This is for incoming new families and K families and takes place after drop off on the first day of school. It's an opportunity to grab a cup of coffee (and maybe a tissue or two!) and connect with other parents.
Back to School Picnic
This is great opportunity to connect with other UNES families at the start of the school year! Scheduled toward the end of the first month of school, bring your own blanket and chairs and enjoy a picnic in the school yard. In the past, we have hosted this as a bring your own picnic or we have had vendors on site selling food. Specific details will be provided once school gets under way!
Seed to Salad
Younger students (K and 1st grade) learn what it takes to nurture seeds into food, which they harvest, prepare, and eat! In addition to gaining hands-on experiences with seeds and plants, the Seed-to-Salad gardens give children a new appreciation for the sources of their food.
Walk/Bike to School
This event encourages students to walk or bike to school! For families that live a little further, consider parking near the school and biking or walking the rest of the way. Children are greeted with a table of healthy snacks to choose from and sometimes an activity such as an obstacle course.
Talent Show
This is an opportunity for students (K-5) to share their passions and interests! All students are encouraged and provided the opportunity to participate. Whether it be singing, playing an instrument, dancing, doing a skit, telling jokes...your child (solo or in a group) will have two minutes to do their thing! Our incredibly Music teacher, Mr. Yankou, along with a couple of other parents, help coordinate this fun filled event.
Staff Appreciation
Held twice a year, the PTA sets up a nice breakfast or luncheon in the staff lounge as a gesture of our appreciation. Parent volunteers are often needed for set up and clean up, as well as for donations to the event.
Earth Fest
This is an all day, super fun event that is held outdoors (weather permitting) at our school to recognize Earth Day. A whole lot of parent volunteers assist with leading various learning stations/activities that are set up all around the outside of the school.
